Here is what Blackberry should do to avoid looking stupid

Blackberry will never be as "fun" as an iPhone or Android, so why even
bother trying. Everytime they make a move in that direction they end
up looking silly or awkward. Instead of being a copy cat, they should
focus on one single thing: Be the best damn business phone on the
planet. This is an area where they still dominate, but not for long.
People are quickly finding out that they can have both business and
pleasure on an iPhone or Android. Blackberry needs to get back to the
things that got them to where they are today, and stop worrying about
the teenagers who love to text.

News is like candy, but books are like a juicy steak covered in A1 sauce

I read the news all day long, but I won't really learn anything. I am
just consuming headlines and short articles without really thinking
about them. I don't feel like this is a good way for me to spend my
time. I'd rather be learning about how a foreign culture operates, or
about different education systems throughout the world, or about how
certain technologies really work. I am not going to find that info in
the news, but I will find it in books. Books are something that I love
very very much, but I haven't really spent any time with recently. I
want to change that. Because it really doesn't matter when I find out
about something, it's how I understand it and how I react to it.

That's not "professional"

I hate when people say that. Makes me want to punch them in the face.
Who are they to determine what is "professional"? Does wearing a suit
and tie make me more "professional" than someone who doesn't? Is
sucking on mints more "professional" than chewing gum? Is sounding
like a robot more "professional" than actually being real with people?
When I think about this stuff I realize that it doesn't really matter
what people think is "professional". No one knows what "professional"
really means. They are just making it up as they go.

Go through the previous paragraph again and replace "professional"
with "corporate". That is what we think professional is.

$14.99 vs $15

I recently got a $15 iTunes gift card, and decided I wanted to buy a movie with it. The movie was $14.99, so now I have $.01 left on my gift card. This is insanely stupid. I wish the movie was a straight $15, or the gift card was only for $14.99 so that I didn't have one stupid penny left. What am I going to do with that one penny? Why can't we just be honest with our prices? If you think about it, it's the same damn price anyway.

Warranties

When a product has a one year warranty, the company is telling you that you can only expect their product to function well for one year. BUT! If you spend $XX.XX they can extend that warranty for you. Isn't that great? You get to pay more because the company doesn't believe their product will last very long! What a great deal!

Fuck that

The Lying Car Wash

There is this car wash around me that opened up not too long ago. Their big selling point is a $5 car wash with free vacuums. It sounds really great but the problem is that it's all bullshit. The $5 car wash is for the very very very basic wash. The basically just throw water on your car for $5. If you want the really good car wash, it's $15. Ok, well at least they have free vacuums right? Na. The vacuums suck (pun). I literally couldn't vacuum any dirt out of my car because the suction was so poor. I ended up paying $15 dollars for something I should have just done at home for free.

So what's my point. I feel like I was lied too. Their pricing wasn't honest, and the moment I figured out what was going on, I was pissed. I felt like I had been taken. Yes they got me the first time, but I will never go back there again. If they had been honest up front about the $15 then you wouldn't be reading this, but they gotta "sell" right?

You deserve nothing

I was just watching a stand up bit from Louie CK, and he was talking about how people think they are entitled to everything. He talks about how we demand things and think nothing bad is ever going to happen to us. Which, when you think about it, is not true. We are entitled to nothing, and there is a good chance that at some point in our lives something bad will happen. This is a fact of life. Here is what you need to do:
1. Stop thinking that you're owed something, because you're not. If you want something you have to go get it. No one is going to give it to you.

2. You are not invincible. I'm about to be 24, so I get this felling sometimes, but I see how it can be dangerous. Bad things can happen, acknowledge it, but don't dwell on it.

Don't be a dick. Be a GOOD person.

Bosses don't know everything

Just because you're the boss, doesn't mean you know everything. Instead of acting like you do, talk to your employees. Your employees are smart people. If they are "dumb", you probably made them that way. You have to let them think for themselves, and be creative. Once you take that away from them, they will hate you forever. So stop with the power trip, and go have an actual conversation with the people that give you a reason to work.

Function vs Form

There are always trade offs when it comes to design. Getting the right balance between function and form is very difficult. If it's not functional, can beauty make up for it? If it's not beautiful, can function make up for it? These are tough questions to answer because, beauty is subjective and function isn't always possible. So here are my solutions:

If you can't make it functional, you might as well make it beautiful.

or

If you can't make it beautiful, you might as well make it functional.

But try to find some middle ground.

No one is stupid

If I know something that you don’t, are you stupid? No. You just don’t know what I know. I’m sure there are plenty of things that you know, that I don’t. That’s how it works. Different people know different things, and that doesn’t make anyone stupid, just different.
